Until his Bar Mitzvah, Thomas Friedman studied at a Hebrew school five days a week. He then enrolled at St. Louis Park High School located in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and wrote articles for his school’s newspaper.

After that, he attended the University of Minnesota for 2 years before transferring to Brandeis University, from where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Mediterranean studies in 1975. He also attended The American University in Cairo and studied Arabic, graduating from its Arabic language unit (ALU) in 1974. Later on, he joined St Antony’s College at the University of Oxford as a Marshall Scholar and received an M.Phil. degree in Middle Eastern studies.

He was 19 years old at the time of his father’s demise.

Ever since he was a child, he wanted to become a professional golfer as his father used to often take him to the golf course for a round after work. After playing a number of sports, he became serious about tennis and golf and caddied at a local country club as well as caddied for professional golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez as the US Open came to his town in 1970.

In December 1968, Thomas Friedman visited Israel and became deeply interested in the place and he subsequently spent all three of his high school summers living in Kibbutz HaHotrim, near Haifa. He later described his high school years as “one big celebration of Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War.”

In 2006, he taught a class in economics at Brandeis University and was a commencement speaker at the university the following year.
